Safety tips while using your credit card on holidays

Going on holidays is a time to relax, explore new places and create moments that will last forever. Despite all the fun being had, it is important not to ignore your financial safety - particularly when it comes to your credit card. Although credit cards provide a secure option for paying while travelling, they are still vulnerable to theft and credit card fraud.
Credit card fraud tips – staying safe
To protect your finances, here are some essential credit card fraud and safety tips to keep in mind before or during your time away.
- Don’t use public WIFI
Avoid accessing your financial accounts or shopping online using public or unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Use mobile data or a virtual private network (VPN) to keep your information secure while on the go. - Use contactless or mobile payments
Before you travel, add your card to your mobile wallet (Apple Pay or Google Pay) and ensure it’s working. See our guide on how to use mobile wallets for additional information. Some wallets may require internet access to be set up or verified, so it’s best to complete this step ahead of time. When available, use contactless cards or mobile wallets for payments - they’re fast, simple, and more secure. Your actual card number isn’t shared during transactions, which can reduce the risk of fraud. - Use card controls
When you're not using your credit card or if it's kept in a hotel safe while you're out and about on your holiday - it's a good idea to temporarily disable it for added security. If you hold an Avant Money Credit Card, the Avant Money mobile app allows you to: Freeze your card in an instant when it’s not in use and unfreeze it just as easily when you’re ready to use it again. This can stop someone using your card if it is misplaced or stolen.
Download the Avant Money app from your app store to access these features and more.
- Set up account alerts
Turn on transaction alerts for your credit card. This way, you’ll be alerted to any charges right away, making it easier to spot and report unauthorised activity immediately. If you hold an Avant Money Credit Card, you can access this feature in our mobile app. - Keep an eye on your account statements
Even though your bank monitors for suspicious activity, it’s still a good idea to review your credit card statements during and after your trip. You’re the most familiar with your own spending and checking your statements helps you quickly confirm that all charges are correct. If something doesn’t look right, you can then report it straight away. - Report lost or stolen cards or mobile devices right away
If your credit card or mobile device (with your card in a mobile wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay) is lost or stolen, contact your bank or card issuer right away. Reporting quickly can help prevent unauthorised transactions and allows your bank to protect your account.
If you’re looking for a credit card to help fund your holiday, consider the Avant Money One Card or the Everyday+ Card. All come with great benefits that can make taking care of your expenses while travelling easier. Use our Credit Card Eligibility Checker to check if you qualify, and if eligible, you can apply online quickly and easily.
